Guys, a word of advice
Guys, a word of advice - when we girls are happy, you guys are happy, and nothing makes us happier than a bit of effort from our significant other, especially when it comes to a surprise romantic night in, you know, candles, food, low music, kids on a sleepover… somewhere else… and of course wine to set the mood. Now if the pressure hasn’t got to you yet, then here follows my one-stop shop fool-proof guide to choosing wine for you and your other, and lets face it, better half. So this column is all for you boys, right, ready, em…you’d better take notes, Reserve De Sours, Sparkling Brut Rose, €19.90 available in Cellars Big Wine Warehouse, Naas Road. and Deveneys Dundrum Who doesn’t like a bit of pink sparkle? This is for the girl who’s the first up to dance at a party, doesn’t take herself too seriously, can’t miss an episode of Corrie or Desperate Housewives and probably has a subscription to one if not all the celebrity magazines. It’s like a little black dress, never out of fashion. So go ahead, perk up her day.
Astrolabe Pinot Gris 06, €17.99 available in O’ Briens Wines nationwide
New Zealand seems determined to take on the world. Not content with capturing our hearts with stunning Sauvignon Blanc now they are going head to head with the mighty Italians and stealing Pinot Grigio’s crown. Except here they call it Pinot Gris. This is a seriously good wine, perfect for that feisty minx that drives you absolutely mad, but you just can’t live without. Serve this with hot and spicy Thai food and you’ve scored…
Protos Verdejo 06, €12.99 available in The Corkscrew, Dublin 2, The BottleShop, Kilmacud and other independents nationwide
Thank God, yet another serious Spanish wine producer making fab white wine from the verdejo grape. I do love this grape, I have been on this buzz for most of last year and it doesn’t seem to be wavering, especially after trying this one. I see this as one for the serious, deep thinking girl in your life, reserved but an absolute raver once she gets going. You know what they say, always look out for the quiet ones…
Hunter’s Pinot Noir, Marlborough 06, €19.99 available in Superquinn, Cellars Naas Road, Sheridans, Mullagh Co. Cavan and nationwide
Like us girls, when the Pinot Noir grape is good, it is very very good but when it’s bad it is rotten. This, my friends is a very good one. Another New Zealand favourite, soft and juicy with just the right amount of heat, it is the most sensual of all my chosen wines, think roaring fires, soft candlelight and enough spice to heat up any romantic encounter.
P.S. This is not only for the guys really, so girls, if you want to impress your man, try any of the above, they work just as well on both sexes.
