The business of wine

The business of wine can be a bit of a minefield for the amateur. Whether it’s for a corporate gift, a bottle to impress the boss or just something for yourself, the pressure to get it right is huge. My advice is to try something a little bit unique and support the home team. The Best to Impress the Boss - Chateau Leoville Barton available from Mitchells and most good wine shops. Irishman Thomas Barton, or French Tom as he fondly became known, founded one the most successful Bordeaux wine companies which still bears his name to this day.  His grandson Hugh later seized the opportunity to buy up parts of the then failing chateaux Langoa and Leoville. Since then Chateau Leoville Barton has consistently produced outstanding wines and, depending on the vintage, can be a very worthwhile investment.  Retailing above €100.00 it is something a bit special but if your budget doesn’t stretch to this they also produce La Reserve de Leoville, a second wine that is softer and more mellow and the 03 is available right now at O’Briens wine shops at the €33.00 mark. The Best for Corporate Gifts -Chateau de Fieuzal available from Mitchell’s, Glasthule and other good wine shops One of the new crop of Irish Wine Geese is Lochlann Quinn, better known as the Chairman of Allied Irish Banks. He bought Chateau de Fieuzal in Bordeaux back in 2001. Producing both a stunning red and white wine, his second wine L’Abeille, retailing at around €30.00, is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. It is crisp and dry and perfect as an aperitif. It’s usually sold with a bit of age on it so your clients can get stuck in straight away… The Best of the New World Award Winners Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay available from Searsons Wine Merchants, Monkstown, Co. Dublin, and other independants Nearly all Australian wines claim to have won awards and there are so many trophies out there it might actually be true, but this is a true New World classic. Owned by Denis Horgan, whose family hail from County Cork, it has been described as Australian answer to Burgundie’s infamous and very expensive Montrachet, a pretty serious accolade in anyone’s book. Rich and full-bodied with a nose of ripe peach and pears this is a wine for food and sharing… The Best for yourself - Limerick Lane Zinfandel available from Redmonds, Dublin and select independents nationwide, contact Karwigwines.ie for stockists. What is it about Cork men that attracts them to wine?? Second generation Corkonian Michael Collins, owner of Limerick Lane Winery produces this Californian stunner from their own Zinfandel grape. Rich and full-bodied with ripe dark fruits, a good dollop of spice and just enough alcohol to keep us all happy. This is one of my favourites for sneaky Monday night drinking. Pull the curtains, shut the rain out and enjoy.
