Gig of the Day: James Vincent McMorrow – Dolan's, Limerick

After just releasing his first album last week, James Vincent McMorrow is hitting the road to play a string of dates around the country. The record, Early in the Morning, is an exquisitely assembled collection of folk songs that includes 'Take You Down to the Red Oak Tree', which featured on a recent Barnardos advert. It took three years to write and five months in the studio where, as he says himself, “I recorded every day on my own, until one day I stopped and realised I had 11 songs that were the best I could make them.” Those tunes are simplistic and ethereal, with arresting lyrics and a voice that sends shivers down your spine.
His appearance at Dolan's is part of a 14-stop Irish tour and next week will also see the broadcast of a session he recorded for the RTÉ 2 programme, Other Voices.
