Album: Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History

For any new band to venture forth into the world of alternative guitar music these days is a bold move. Such is the sheer amount of competition that to fall into the dreaded indie landfill category is a very real possibility, with a mid afternoon slot at some European festival the best they can hope for. Such obscurity is no respecter of hype and so Bangor's Two Door Cinema Club, even armed with glowing predictions across the board, do not have a guaranteed easy ride.
Tourist History, however, is an album that should set them on a solid path. It doesn’t do anything particularly new, but it does what it does with such a verve and enthusiasm that it’s hard not to get swept along. The target market is clearly of a slightly less mature vintage and as such this is hardly a record that feels like is built to last, so heady is the pace as it rushes from track to track. There is, however, no denying that more than your average guitar band intelligence is going on here.
Built for daytime radio play, the hooks are particularly strong and give you the sense that here is an album that could produce four or five single without breaking a sweat. Two Door Cinema are a pop band and proud of it, happy to power their guitar anthems with the artificial beats of a drum machine (although they’ve chosen the human variety for live work). The danger with all this that Tourist History could be little more than a quick thrill, a fate that does nearly befall it. There is, however, just enough going on musically to suggest that here is a band that has more to offer than a succession of catchy melodies and killer choruses. For now though, that approach will have to wait for the older, wiser Two Door Cinema Club. Right here, right now, they’re too busy having fun.
