Gig of the Day: Girls, Dublin Whelan's

You may think that growing up in a cult where all music from the outside world was contraband may seriously stunt your musical development, but Girls frontman Christopher Owens unwittingly found away around it. Nobody thought to ban films, so he'd get his fix by listening to snippets of songs from the soundtracks. It gave him the grounding he needed for starting his own band after breaking free and moving to San Francisco, where he met his fellow Girls collaborators. Their music is a sublime style of shoegazey, psychedelic, indie rock and the sound has been compared to the likes of Elvis Costello and the Beach Boys.
Their debut album, which, incidentally is titled Album, set critics hearts aflutter on its release last year, with many sources naming it one of the best releases of 2009. Girls are a band with an old-fashioned work ethic when it comes to touring and their show at Whelan's is sure to be full of equally old-fashioned rock 'n roll attitude.
