Gig of the Day: Hayseed Dixie, Belfast Spring & Airbrake

Hayseed Dixie aren't your average bluegrass band. Sure, they have the banjos and fiddles just like any other musicians at a hoedown but it's the tunes that set them apart. Instead of opting for old-fashioned, knee-slapping tunes, the Appalachian outfit take classic rock songs from the likes of AC/DC, Kiss and Mötorhead and give them a hillbilly makeover. So far they've released eight albums of such material, some of which was even penned by themselves. Their latest album, Killer Grass, was released just this month.
The American five-piece are at their best when playing live and their reputation has secured them slots at the Glastonbury and Roskilde festivals in recent years. They also curate their own festival – called Loopallu – in the Scottish village of Ullapool each September. Tonight's gig at the Spring & Airbrake is the last of five Irish dates on the band's current tour.
