Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures
For a new band’s debut album to arrive under the weight of anticipation is not a new occurrence. For it to come with a mountain of hype behind it is not unusual. Yet the anticipation that has surroundedThem Crooked Vultures’ calling card is greater than normal. The reason is clear, that any band featuring Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones is always going to catch the eye. That they fail to live up to those expectations is perhaps not surprising – this would have to be a genuine classic just to come close – but that this is quite such a disaster certainly in.
Consider that line-up for a moment though. Both Homme and Grohl front bands that are given credibility way beyond their talents, while Jones is rock royalty alright but hardly a trail blazer of late. It sounds exactly like you might expect, an extremely loud, back to basics ROCK record. Only the Dead Weather have captured such a raw sound this year. While that record managed some moments of genuine inspiration amongst the blood and thunder, Them Crooked Vultures huffs and puffs to very little effect.
Quite simply, this just isn’t very good. Only the previously released ‘New Fang’ displays any spark, a lightness of touch amongst the clattering bass, drums and guitars. The rest of it is depressingly dull, reminiscent of Led Zepplin without the overblown majesty, Foo Fighters without the odd good tune and Queens Of The Stone Age without...well just Queens Of The Stone Age. The chances are that if they were an unknown band this would find itself largely ignored, but given its creators you can be sure that there will be those queuing up to declare it a masterpiece. Don’t be fooled. Move on, there’s nothing to see here.
