I had lunch recently in The Secret - a new outlet for Giorgio Casari, the man behind The Unicorn on Merrion Row - and was very impressed. Lunch was the set menu of two courses for €19.50, three for €25.50 with a good range of choice but not swamped with dozens of unnecessary options either. It also usefully runs Tuesday til Saturday for a less rushed affair on the weekend.
I'm not usually a salad kinda guy but my starter of The House Salad was outstanding; with fresh leaves, baby tomatoes, excellent dressing and thin slivers of medium rare, exquisitely tasty beef made it one of the best I've had in years. I usually steer clear of them as they're often so unsatisfying but not this. The greens were tingling with freshness and the dressing zesty and well balanced without being too overbearing.
The main course was a very comforting roast of the day, on the day in hand it was pork on a bed of creamy mash. Often a pork is a roast which gets let down when done en masse, but here it was succulent and flavoursome, not let get in any way too dry, which is a regular crime against this meat.
Both courses were washed down with the very pleasant Unicorn Pinot Grigio. The service was spot on, with the staff there when you needed them, and perhaps most importantly, not hovering over you when you didn't need them. They were effective and knowledgeable with a welcoming and warm demeanour. The setting is very natural, having a focus on comfort and ease in furnishings and lighting, with the art work being like the food, initially Italianate and then diverse with a twist.
You think you're getting standard enough fare and then it turns out to be something that bit more. Decent food fairly priced, in a cosy and relaxing atmosphere. Their set lunch seems to fall in parallel with many other decent restaurants in the vicinity such as Town. Il Segreto is well worth a repeat visit, let's hope things stay at this standard.
