Film Review: Shelter

Shelter

Looking for a no nonsense fright? You could do a lot worse than creepy low-key horror Shelter - adequate revenge for all you boyfriends forced to sit through a succession of terrible rom-coms . It seems the writer of the 2003 thriller Identity has a thing for multiple personality disorders, as the plotfocuses on Jonathan Rhys Meyer's schizophrenic Adam and all the boys and girls therein.

Psychologist Cara (Julianne Moore) believes it's a cut and dry case, but soon the bodies start piling up and things get seriously supernatural. If you can stifle your giggles as Rhys Meyers shifts personas - at one point he is a little girl - the Cork-born actor does himself proud with an effective, creepy performance. Plot-holes and convenient logic lapses are papered over with excellent, claustrophobic camera work, and the film's jarring moments - the effective off-screen switches in Adam's personality forced through with crunching sound design and character reactions - demonstrate that directors Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein clearly know how to unsettle an audience. However, as we've sadly come to expect from 90% of US made horror films, it all falls apart in the final third, almost undoing any good work done up to that point. 'Silly' barely does justice to the wave of foolishness that washes over the film's final 20 minutes with its senseless dispatching of characters, old-thyme expository footage and killer sound waves. Yes, KILLER SOUND WAVES. However, even with the final few moments confusingly undersold, there are enough chills and mood earned in the first hour to justify your attention and some future - but better scripted - work from the Swedish pair.
