Dublin Book Festival highlights

Bookended by International World Book Day and International Women’s Day the Dublin Book Festival runs from Saturday 6th until Monday March 8th at City Hall, Dublin. The festival is interested in making culture accessible and available to all, as such all events at the festival are free and unticketed. The Irish Times ‘In Conversation’ series generally generates a lot of interest and it is therefore possible to book a maximum of two tickets in advance of these events and bookings are also being taken for the children’s workshops.

And if all that intense bookishness gets a bit too much for you why not pop into the Lord Edward for some Book Festival refreshments on Saturday. Those of you who have attended the unmistakable and offbeat Flat Lake Literary and Arts Fest will be familiar with The Good Room and with Captain Butty. If you haven’t got a clue what I’m talking about then this is one not to be missed.
From midday on Saturday The Good Room’s hosts will have the best china out for doling out daysent cups of tae and a couple of custard creams. Though not before proceedings kick off with The Rosary. There’ll be lost of literary ladies reading from their work and chatting about bookish things, also expect plenty of games such as Bring Your Girlfriend to Meet my Mammy (to see if she’s suitable marriage material) and Get the Messages for Mammy. Closing the day will be a bit of an oul pray with The Angelus and 6pm. And at 6.01 Captain Butty himself will take to the decks and have you doing the hucklebuck well into the small hours.
Just don’t be seen crawling in the back door at a quarter passed the eleven.
